So the people there are already isolated, in that they are poor, they are still stuck trying to find work and find money to keep living. The book is set just after the time of the Great Depression, about a street that is still very much in the throes of that depression period. The book actually describes the main characters as a colorful blend of misfits, which I think is absolutely perfect in describing the characters in the book, and the main struggles that they all contend with at some point throughout the book, which is definitely the concept of isolation.įirst up, the setting of this book is already quite isolated in and of itself. They retain their composure, they aren't particularly postmodern or anything. ![]() They often come off a extremely dated now, but Wagner is able to update the sensibilities within the storytelling without reinventing them. Wagner has a mastery in place and a reverence with these characters. He works best at telling competent and confidently voiced tales such as Sandman Mystery Theater, Green Hornet, Madame Xanadu, John Tower, The Shadow, The Spirit and here.Zorro. Wagner is traditionally best know for his more experimental and creator-owned works Mage and Grendel-but he's got a solid presence on the pulp and genre tales (generally outside of the Capes other than some Batman, Trinity and ![]() He's not flashy or showy-but he's generally got excellent scripting and storytelling in place.
